Why choose neodymium magnets?

Neodymium magnets, also known as NdFeB magnets, are rare-earth permanent magnets that offer high strength in a compact size. They're a good fit where space is limited and you need strong holding or positioning.

Ceramic magnets may be a better-value option where moderate holding force is enough.

How to choose a neodymium magnet

Grade

Our stock range includes N35, N40, N42 and N52. The number is roughly the material's maximum energy product in MGOe. Like for like, a higher grade generally gives more pull, but grade alone doesn't determine how a finished magnet will perform. See our magnet grades guide.

Coating

Neodymium magnets contain iron, so they need protection against corrosion. Nickel plating is common across our range, with black epoxy used on selected products. Check our coatings guide if you're choosing magnets for damp or outdoor use.

Temperature

Neodymium magnets are generally more sensitive to heat than ceramic magnets. Temperature limits vary by grade and product, so contact us before ordering for a hot application.

Pull force

Check how a quoted pull force was measured. Figures commonly describe a straight pull from thick, flat steel, while gaps, coatings, thin steel and sideways loading can reduce usable holding force. Allow a suitable safety margin and test the magnet in the actual assembly.

Size

Dimensions are generally listed in inches. For example, 0.500 in diameter × 0.250 in thick is 12.7 × 6.35 mm. Some product pages also include metric equivalents. If you need a particular size, contact us with your required dimensions.

Neodymium magnets can snap together, trap fingers and chip or shatter. Keep them away from implanted medical devices, magnetic stripe cards and sensitive electronics. Keep magnets away from children too, as small magnets can be a serious swallowing hazard.
