How alnico magnets are made

Alnico magnets are made by casting, where the molten alloy is poured into a mould, or by sintering, where powdered alloy is pressed into shape and heated. Cast alnico suits larger and more complex shapes, while sintered alnico suits smaller magnets made in higher volumes to tighter tolerances.

How to choose an alnico magnet

When choosing an alnico magnet, consider the grade, coating or construction, operating temperature and handling requirements.

Coating

Alnico has good natural corrosion resistance, so unlike neodymium it doesn't usually need a protective coating. Coating requirements still depend on the product construction and environment, so check the product specifications where moisture, chemicals or other conditions are a consideration.

Temperature

Published operating limits vary by product: the SGC-1 button magnet is listed for up to 550°C (1,022°F), while the SGD-1 pot magnet is listed for up to 220°C (428°F). Check the selected product's specifications and contact us to confirm suitability for your assembly and operating conditions.

Machining and handling

Alnico is a hard, brittle alloy. Where finishing is needed, alnico requires specialist grinding or machining, so specify any holes or slots before manufacture. Handle magnets carefully to avoid chipping, keep them away from strong opposing magnetic fields, and store bar magnets with a steel keeper to maintain their strength.

Can alnico magnets be demagnetised?

Yes. Alnico magnets are permanent magnets but have lower resistance to demagnetisation than rare earth or ceramic magnets. Strong opposing magnetic fields or unsuitable magnetic conditions can reduce their strength, so correct handling, storage and application design are important.
