Can a magnet damage a laptop?
Put simply, no – a magnet can not harm your laptop. Especially when it comes to the average magnets found around our office spaces. A magnet could wipe out your laptop’s hard drive, but it would take an extremely powerful magnet to do so.
And in case you weren’t aware, laptops actually contain a few magnets themselves. There are usually two found in the hard drive and your computer’s speakers have magnets in them, too.
Will a magnet wipe a hard drive clean?
As stated earlier, it would take a massively strong magnet to cause even the slightest problem with a hard drive. Workplace refrigerators, cubes and neodymium magnets will not cause your hard drive to be wiped clean (sorry to disappoint all the hackers who may have done this in 90’s action movies).
Can a magnet erase a CD?
Though they might not be as popular as years past, CDs are still a great format to listen to music on but a magnet cannot erase a CD, DVD or even a flash drive (or other external drive) for that matter. The magnet can’t alter or affect the data on the disks, as the data is not arranged magnetically.
