Rare Earth Permanent Magnets
Rare earth magnets have the distinction of being known as the strongest type of permanent magnets. They are preferred over the more common ferrite and alnico magnets which have a magnetic field of only 5- to 100 milliteslas. On the other hand, rare earth permanent magnets are powerful enough to create a magnetic field of more than 1200 milliteslas. Common applications of rare earth permanent magnets are in computer hard drives, audio speakers, fishing reel brakes and bike dynamos.
There are two main types of rare earth permanent magnets – Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt. Neodymium magnets are preferred for electromechanical applications, due to their strength and reasonable price. Though they are brittle in nature, these rare earth permanent magnets can be coated with gold, nickel, zinc and tin to make them resistant to corrosion. Neodymium has the strongest magnetic field strength but in terms of resistance to oxidation and high temperature, it falls short of Samarium Cobalt magnets.
Samarium Cobalt magnets are less common than Neodymium magnets because of their weaker magnetic field, and higher cost. However, due to their high Curie point, Samarium Cobalt magnets are able to withstand extreme temperature environments.
If you are looking for Neodymium and Samarian Cobalt rare earth permanent magnets, Jobmaster Magnets is the right place to shop. Neodymium magnets are available in grades exceeding 50 MGOe and Samarium Cobalt magnets have a maximum grade of 26 MGOe. Both are available in blocks, discs and rings.
